Chapter 14 Nonsense
Chapter 14 Nonsense
Cheng Huazhang rushed into the bedroom and the first thing he saw was a black bottle lying on the floor with a glaring white skull drawn on it.
—It's pesticide!
His blood seemed to freeze instantly, and his gaze abruptly turned to the bed.
Gao Jie lay there motionless, her eyes closed, with obvious traces of liquid remaining at the corner of her mouth.
"Gao Jie, wake up!"
Cheng Huazhang rushed to the bedside in terror, his hands trembling as he desperately pushed, but the person on the bed did not respond and had lost consciousness.
His mind went blank, and without thinking about anything else, he scooped the person up, hoisted them onto his back, and rushed out.
He bumped into Cheng Zheng, who was catching up with him, in the corridor.
"Your mother drank pesticide! Call the hospital immediately and tell them to prepare for emergency treatment!"
Cheng Zheng's face suddenly darkened, and he rushed downstairs to the phone.
Fortunately, the affiliated hospital is not far away when you turn right out of the residential compound.
Cheng Huazhang carried Gao Jie to the hospital quickly. As soon as they arrived at the entrance, his sister-in-law Zhang Mei, along with several nurses and a stretcher, came to greet them.
Gao Jie was placed on a stretcher, and Zhang Mei directed, "Quick! Get her straight to the emergency room!"
The group hurriedly pushed Gao Jie away.
The door to the emergency room slammed shut, shutting out the family members.
Time seemed to stand still in the corridor outside the emergency room. Cheng Huazhang paced back and forth like a trapped beast, occasionally peering through the small window on the emergency room door, though he could see nothing. Finally, his face ashen, he sat back down on the wooden chair against the wall, lighting and extinguishing the cigarette between his fingers.
Cheng Zheng stood to the side with his hands at his sides, his cold, sharp gaze sweeping over his anxious father, a mocking smile playing on his lips.
Now I know I'm in a hurry.
Cheng Huazhang's expression changed: "Don't look at me like that. Go to the cafeteria and buy something light. Your mother will definitely be hungry tonight."
Cheng Zheng glanced at the time, then turned and left.
Not long after they left, the operating room door opened, and Gao Jie was wheeled out, her eyes still closed. Zhang Mei and another nurse pushed her bed from either side.
Cheng Huazhang rushed forward anxiously: "How is your sister-in-law?"
Zhang Mei said, "The gastric lavage was performed in time, so there's no danger to her life."
Cheng Huazhang breathed a sigh of relief and followed them into the ward.
Gao Jie was wheeled into a private room and placed on a bed. Zhang Mei dismissed another nurse, leaving only Zhang Mei, Cheng Huazhang, and Gao Jie on the bed in the room.
Zhang Mei questioned, "Brother, I shouldn't interfere in your relationship, but your wife was so angry she drank pesticide. How long are you planning to keep this a secret? What exactly is your relationship with Shen Qing?"
Cheng Huazhang glanced at his sister-in-law, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes: "I will give your sister-in-law an explanation for this matter, so don't cause any more trouble."
Just then, Gao Jie, lying on the bed, weakly opened her eyes, her voice barely audible: "You...you need to give me an explanation right now...your sister-in-law isn't an outsider..."
Cheng Huazhang: "The most important thing for you right now is to get some rest. I'll talk to you when we get home."
Gao Jie exclaimed excitedly, "Cough cough cough cough... I want you to tell me now!"
Zhang Mei stepped forward to pat her on the back and turned angrily to say, "Brother, are you trying to drive your wife to her death? She's told me everything. You keep saying that girl isn't your illegitimate child, but someone else asked you to take care of her. Just tell me that person's name! If you do, she'll believe you."
Cheng Huazhang knew that his wife and his sister-in-law talked about everything.
I have no secrets from my younger siblings.
He shook his head helplessly: "Xiaomei, don't meddle. You go ahead with your work. I'll stay here with your sister-in-law."
"Brother, I really don't understand. Even if your wife finds out, she won't cause trouble for the other party. What's wrong with talking about it?"
Zhang Mei pressed for details, and Gao Jie started sobbing and crying again. Cheng Huazhang rubbed his face in annoyance and turned to the hospital bed: "Wife, you rest first. I'll go home and get you some clean clothes and daily necessities. We can talk about anything else after you're discharged."
As soon as the door closed, Gao Jie, who had been wiping away tears on the hospital bed, immediately sat up abruptly, showing no trace of the weakness she had just experienced after her stomach was pumped.
"Xiaomei, look at how he tries to hide it. I even tried to commit suicide by drinking pesticide to force him, but he still wouldn't tell the truth! How can I not suspect that she's his illegitimate daughter?"
Gao Jie gripped the bedsheet with her fingers, angrily accusing the injustice.
Zhang Mei agreed, "You're right, sister-in-law. When you told me about this, I thought you misunderstood my brother, but judging from his reaction today, it's probably some kind of romantic entanglement he's had! If he was really asked by a friend, why wouldn't he dare reveal the friend's name?"
"Because you know all of your brother's friends, if he dared to make up a story to deceive you, it would be easy for him to be exposed, which is why he's been hesitant to say it!"
"You're right," Gao Jie nodded. "So what should I do now? If I really divorce him, wouldn't that be making room for that illegitimate daughter? I'm not willing to accept that!"
Zhang Mei suggested, "Keep causing trouble. Drink pesticide today, cut your wrists tomorrow. I'm at the hospital, I'll cooperate with you anytime. By the way, won't your brother find out that the pesticide bottle actually contains traditional Chinese medicine for clearing heat and detoxifying? You'd better hide it well."
Gao Jie shook her head: "He won't find out that I drank all the Chinese medicine inside. Even if he finds the bottle and checks it, it will be empty."
Outside the ward.
Cheng Huazhang, who had turned back to give some advice, overheard the entire conversation between his sister-in-law.
It turns out that the suicide attempt by overdose was a farce orchestrated by the victim herself.
This is ridiculous!
He gritted his teeth, his face ashen, and was about to push the door open when Cheng Zheng came from the other end of the corridor carrying the congee and side dishes he had just bought.
The father and son looked at each other. Cheng Zheng glanced at him with disdain and indifference in his eyes, and in the end, he said nothing and passed by.
"You brat, stop right there!"
Cheng Zheng stopped and turned to look at him. Cheng Huazhang wanted to scold his son, but then he remembered that his son was only acting this way because he cared about his mother's feelings. His anger subsided a bit, and he coughed twice before saying:
"Your mother is fine now, you don't need to worry. What she drank wasn't pesticide, it was traditional Chinese medicine."
"Do you expect me to only care if she actually drinks pesticide?"
"You brat, how dare you talk like that? When have I ever stopped caring about her? Whatever she wants, haven't I bought it for her? She controls all my salary and can spend it as she pleases. Look around the compound, everyone who's worked their way up to my position is the boss at home. They even have to keep track of their wives' spending. And they always treat their husbands like royalty?"
"Your mom is always nagging me. Recently, it's just that I didn't tell her about Xiaoqing, and she's acting like all the good things I did for her in the past have been wiped away."
Cheng Huazhang frowned and complained, while Cheng Zheng remained expressionless.
Forget it, there's no point in arguing with this brat; he's already on his mother's side anyway. Changing the subject, Cheng Huazhang asked, "By the way, how's Xiaoqing doing at the factory lately? Please take good care of her and don't make things difficult for her."
