Chapter 17 "Loot"
Chapter 17 "Loot"
A maid dressed in black and white stood in the bright sunlight, her gaze cold as she stared straight at Edmund in front of the door.
"You're Edmund Clemons?"
"you…"
"I am the housekeeper of this house, and also the personal maid and assistant of the landlady, Edith. By blocking my way, can you interpret this as your intention to forcibly seize the private property purchased by my young lady?" She tilted her head slightly, and the air around her seemed to become heavier and more stagnant.
"Willow, don't be so cold." Before Edmund could politely apologize and step aside, the twin-tailed girl appeared from behind Willow with a bouncy, nightingale-like gait.
Her bright eyes swept over Edmund.
"My father always thought I was unreasonable and domineering in the family, and he'd throw me out to fend for myself over the smallest things. How can you be like my father, getting angry at a stranger over such a trivial matter?" She patted Willow's shoulder, speaking in a sweet voice that Edmund could hear. "Do you remember what I told you before I left? Since we're leaving the family, we should start anew in our own way!"
Facial expressions and posture management are essential skills for any maid, and Willow, as the personal maid of the second daughter of the Enfield family, is among the best.
Even so, after hearing Edith's voice.
Willow couldn't help but turn around, her wide eyes filled with astonishment.
Miss Edith, it was indeed our plan just now that one of us would play the bad cop and the other the good cop to give this "adventurer" a hard time.
You play the one who says nice things, and I'll be the villain.
But your delicate, high-pitched voice...?
Uh.
You weren't like this in the family before.
"My name is Edith, it's nice to meet you!" Edith ignored Willow's surprise and went straight to Edmund, extending her hand in a friendly manner.
This was not the first time I had met him.
But it was our first meeting.
I have to make the very, very best impression on Edmund!
Edmund hesitated for a moment.
It is highly disrespectful to touch a lady's hand abruptly, but it is even more disrespectful to ignore the friendliness of a higher-ranking nobleman.
In the strictly hierarchical Holy Kingdom, personal maids are not something that ordinary nobles can have.
Miss Edith is now being polite and courteous.
This is probably setting the stage for something unseemly to happen later.
Edmund suppressed his doubts and extended his hand in a friendly manner: "It's an honor to meet you, Miss Edith."
"I already know that you bought this house."
"Regarding my temporary stay, I believe my previous landlord has already explained the situation to you..."
“We have plenty of time to talk business, Mr. Clemens, why the rush?” Edith gave Edmund a reproachful look, then grabbed his hand and wouldn’t let go. “You know this house best, don’t you intend to show me around? I’ve heard that the furnishings here practically encapsulate the entirety of your adventures.”
"Of course, no problem, Miss Edith." He looked at Edith and realized that this young lady really didn't intend to let go of him. Her personal maid didn't say anything except staring at him coldly. So he had no choice but to lead Edith into the house.
As Willow helped Edith remove her bulky coat and hang it on the rack by the door, he took the opportunity to break free from Edith's control and began to describe the furnishings of the cabin while gesturing.
Just as he had always introduced to every guest who came to visit.
The mahogany dining table in the restaurant was a loot he obtained from a magnificent boss room in the dungeon, and traces of the battle in which he slew that demon can still be seen on the tabletop.
The cashmere rug, which almost covered the entire sofa and coffee table area and was made by an elven magic craftsman, blended styles from multiple races. He had obtained it from a traveling merchant. He told Edith that these merchants, who traveled to various corners of the continent, always had some rare and sought-after items. Whether one could obtain these exquisite or even unique items depended entirely on the price the buyer was willing to pay.
"Oh, so what did you go through to get this carpet?"
"An exquisite silver dagger inlaid with rubies. You may find this a bit strange, but this dagger is what sheltered me and my companions in the darkness throughout our entire adventure. When I first found it, its blade shone with a deep light similar to the night sky. At that time, I thought it was just an ordinary dagger with exquisite craftsmanship and some decorative magic. Such trophies are not common in the depths of the dungeon, but they are not the most precious ones either."
"As we approached a fork in the road in an underground city, its light became increasingly bright, and this unusual phenomenon naturally caught the attention of me and my companions."
"And it was precisely during those few short minutes of stopping that several monsters emerged from the shadows at the crossroads. If it weren't for the warning from this dagger, my companions and I might have fallen straight into their ambush and remained there forever in that deep, dark dungeon."
"I later learned that the magic on its blade was carved by ancient elven craftsmen. When evil spirits roam the vicinity, it emits a faint, starlight-like glow as a warning," Edmund chuckled. "Many people think this exchange wasn't worthwhile, but compared to a dagger that's practically useless outside the dungeon, I much prefer this large, thick wool carpet."
"Then there's this crystal lamp hanging on the living room wall. The process of obtaining it was even more thrilling. Actually, I initially found two crystal lamps; they were originally a complete set. Unfortunately, one of them was smashed by some careless monster on the way out of the dungeon," Edmund said, smiling and shrugging. "But interestingly, as a unique piece, it became several times more expensive than the original set. And since I felt that I might never have the chance to find something so dazzling again, I simply kept it with me."
"After all, compared to the large checks sent by the auction house, I think what I really need is a crystal lamp that allows me to see the starry sky indoors and reminisce about the glorious past."
Edith smiled slightly, her gaze fixed on Edmund's eyes. More than what Edmund was introducing, those eyes, reflecting the lamplight, were the cool, warm lake that her burning soul truly longed to touch.
Willow is different from Edith. Although the course for personal maids includes combat skills and fighting techniques to protect their masters, for her, who has never been to the dungeon, the bizarre, amazing, and blood-and-fire adventure that Edmund described is mysterious and unpredictable.
Listening to Edmund's account, the two marveled at everything they saw.
Available soon.
Edith and Willow's gazes lingered on the silver-haired girl on the sofa.
She was as still and silent as a sculpture.
Edith observed Esther discreetly.
Her smooth, waist-length silver hair...it looked passable.
She is petite but plain-looking, with a delicate and pretty face, but her temperament is as aloof as Alicia's, yet her eyes are dull and dazed.
In a single glance, Edith had already etched a clear definition of Esther into her mind:
A pretentious, aloof white-haired pig.
She turned her head and looked at Edmund with a smile.
"Mr. Clemons, if I may be so bold, is this person in the living room also one of your 'spoils of war' from your adventures?"
